Anonymous asked: How then, exactly do you define atheism? What do you feel is the difference between atheism and irreligion?
That’s a good question, but I believe that irreligion would imply that I believe in capital ‘G’ God, but am not involved in a specific doctrine; in this case, I don’t really go either way, I basically believe in the beyond out of pure hope, but I leave it room to be disputed, also, I believe religion, science and many findings are extremely disputable, given the right findings (religion mostly). Basically, I have no reason to, but I still do out of habit.

Atheism is not sarcasm
Usually, I distance myself from declaring myself an atheist amongst a group of people, firstly because I derive from actually covering said topic with most people, since people aren’t really open to an open discussion. Sure, it’s interesting to hear people’s testimony and whatnot, but usually, that doesn’t make me any less of an atheist. By no means am I bashing on said people, as a respect everyone’s belief, which brings me to my first question: why do people think that to be an atheist, you have to be a joyless, loveless sarcastic, hateful freak of nature.
I believe that humanity probably stems from a superior being or force, therefore I’m not a naturalist atheist, although I’m highly agnostic and will probably never get involved in a religion again. After further consideration, discussion and though, I believe that religion is just an oppressive organization designed to intimidate and enclose certain aspects of society.
It is not my intent to state that the presence of religion in society is entirely negative; just that there are certain aspects of it that society could probably do without. Said aspects (among others) are the following:
- Sexism: The role of a woman in the church keeps being limited to the support of the male of the household and the males at the head of the church. There is a very limited number of religions that permits the active involvement of the woman in certain church roles, such as preaching. Apparently, women are useless at being said beacons of hope, and men are just futile at house work.
- Delusion: Just because they say somethings test your faith, doesn’t mean your faith shouldn’t be tested. Not everything has to be taken so literally from the bible, and frankly, some interpretations are downright wrong (i.e. Westboro Baptist Church)
- Divisiveness: No matter how far someone’s belief is from your own, you are not entitled to say that they are burning in hell and you’re not. Aside from this, it’s stupid to say that if there is a God, that he’d play favorites, and that ignorance of a certain belief is still punishable.
- The commandments are a social contract based on trial and error done during the spawning of social culture:
- The reason why we aren’t allowed to kill people is because cultures where you where readily able to kill became extinct, because they killed each other off (same thing goes for cannibalism).
- We do not covet the other man’s wife, because that’ll probably get you killed by said man, also, once society came in touch with possessions, it became important for men to guarantee a legacy; a legacy only guaranteed by the faithfulness of said wife to provide an heir.
- …who are we kiddin’? We all lie about all sorts of things.
…there are so many things I could write right now, that could take me away from my original argument. What I mainly wanted to write is that my disbelief of the Abrahamic God has not discouraged me from trying to perform good deeds to other people, and developing a moral compass. Of course, sometimes I wonder about life after death, but I’d be wondering either way; my becoming critical of religions doesn’t mean I’ll live a life of havoc, murder and randomness.
My Being atheist does not mean that I get pissed off when I hear people talk about religion or deities, it does not mean that I worship evil, and no, atheism is not a religion… or more, it is as much a religion as “not collecting stamps” is a hobby. Personally, I feel there is much much more to life than religion can fathom or explain; and no, this is not because I practice science, I believe science is merely a means of decription.
Also, I believe that the afore mentioned characteristics mostly apply to the wicked religions of the west, I am not as familiar with eastern religions, if and when I am, I shall post reviews or something… maybe.
